Day 98 of 365 Days of Song

Day 98 – Marvin Gaye – Mercy, Mercy Me

Marvin’s been comforting me today.

Woo ah, mercy mercy me
Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Where did all the blue skies go?
Poison is the wind that blows from the north and south and east

Woo mercy, mercy me, mercy
Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Oil wasted on the ocean and upon our seas
Fish full of mercury

Ah oh mercy, mercy me
Ah things ain’t what they used to be, no no
Radiation under ground and in the sky
Animals and birds who live nearby are dying

Oh mercy, mercy me
Ah things ain’t what they used to be
What about this overcrowded land
How much more abuse from man can she stand?

Day 96 of 365 Days of Song

Day 96 – Prefab Sprout – The King of Rock n Roll

Reminds me of the craziest first date I’ve ever had, from roughly about 4 years ago. It came on the jukebox that night in one of the bars…

All my lazy teenage boasts are now high precision ghosts
And they’re coming round the track to haunt me
When she looks at me and laughs I remind her of the facts
I’m the king of rock ‘n’ roll completely

Day 95 of 365 Days of Song

Day 95 – Patti Page – Old Cape Cod

I was out at the Seaside today with my best-friend. This song came into my head because it’s very summery, which reminds me of Zero-7’s sample of it in one of their singles…also, it reminds me of an excellent and poignant episode of Mad Men (in which this splendid song is used).

If you’re fond of sand dunes and salty air
Quaint little villages here and there
(You’re sure)
You’re sure to fall in love with old Cape Cod

Day 94 of 365 Days of Song

Day 94 – Fleetwood Mac – Everywhere

Reminds me of a such a lovely person I let go so easily. Regret.

Can you hear me calling
Out your name?
You know that I’m falling
And I don’t know what to say

I’ll speak a little louder
I’ll even shout
You know that I’m proud
And I can’t get the words out

Something’s happening
Happening to me
My friends say I’m acting peculiarly

Day 91 of 365 Days of Song

Day 91- Third Eye Blind – I Want You

Probably my favourite song by this band. Its on most of my playlists. I love the line ’send me all your vampires’. I used to think it was: ‘send me all your empires’.

The village church yard is filled with
Bones weeping in the grave
The silver lining of clouds
Shines on people Jesus couldn’t save
You want to know how deeply my soul goes
Deeper than bones
Deeper than bones

Day 90 of 365 Days of Song

Day 90 – Neil Young & Crazy Horse – Cortez The Killer (Live)

He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns
Looking for the new world
In that palace in the sun.

On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wondered
With the secrets of the worlds.

And his subjects
gathered ‘round him
Like the leaves around a tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see.

And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood
straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on.

Hate was just a legend
And war was never known
The people worked together
And they lifted many stones.

They carried them
to the flatlands
And they died along the way
But they built up
with their bare hands
What we still can’t do today.

And I know she’s living there
And she loves me to this day
I still can’t remember when
Or how I lost my way.

He came dancing across the water
Cortez, Cortez
What a killer.

Day 89 of 365 Days of Song

Day 89 – The Verve – On Your Own

As nihilistic as the chorus is, it’s still a very touching song and one that has remained with me from the very second I played it for the first time on my old, crappy CD player:

Tell me what you’ve seen
Was it a dream, was I in it?
Life seems so obscene until it’s over
Who knows?

All I want is someone who can fill the hole
In the life I know
In between life and death when there’s nothing left
Do you wanna know?

You come in on your own
And you leave on your own
Forget the lovers you’ve known
